POST PRODUCTION

Professional post-production is an important part of film and video production. After the shoot, the post producer reviews, corrects and perfects all footage, making it presentable.

Many industry experts refer to post-production as the phase in which the actual work on the film begins. This is no coincidence, because here the raw material collected is processed according to the ideas of the filmmakers. The heart of the process is film editing and digital post-processing. The latter includes, among other things, the editing of image and sound as well as the installation of visual effects.

Post-production activities

The planned length of the film only plays a subordinate role for the work steps in post-production. Should a company be presented in a short, crisp image film? Or should products and services be promoted with an advertising film? Are you planning a larger project, such as a short or even a feature film? Then the post-producer has to deal with a large number of tasks not only during the shoot, but also during the follow-up. One example is color correction, also known as color grading among professionals.

Profound knowledge of post-production is therefore indispensable – regardless of where the collected material is to be used. Be it on a website or as part of a larger film project: the post- or post-production gives the film the desired final touch, both in terms of content and visuals, and transports the message clearly to the audience.

The most important work steps briefly explained

Depending on the type and scope of the film project, the use of different specialists is required. The post-producer is responsible for coordinating editing and digital post-processing, including all settings, including sound and visual effects. In addition, he is responsible for the entire organizational and formal process of production up to the release of the film.

In a first step, the film material is viewed and transferred to an editing system. In addition, it is structured according to shooting days, scenes or other criteria in order to provide a better overview.

The second step is the assembly or video editing. In addition to technical know-how, a lot of creativity is also required here in order to tailor the material to the intended message. Short, concise and convincing: These are just a few of the attributes that editors and editing assistants use as a guide. To ensure that the film editing duo is doing the right thing with their work, it is regularly checked by the post-producer.

The third step is the digital post-processing of image and sound material. It includes, among other things, the compensation of potential differences in quality, color correction and the addition of visual effects. The background music is also part of this final act of film production.
